Art In The Schools on Ocracoke..... Captain's Landing

Thanks to the kindhearted folks at Captain's Landing, my Mother was able to join me while I was teaching on Ocracoke.  Her mobility has been limited, and as her disease progresses it's deteriorating even more rapidly.

At Captain's Landing, we were welcomed with open arms into a first floor handicapped accessible suite that overlooked Silver Lake Harbor.  We were treated to a front row seat for an ever-changing amazing view, and the most glorious sunsets that I've ever seen in my life!  Thanks to them, my Mother was able to enjoy all of this without ever leaving the comfort of our room, and I was able to enjoy my time with her.

able to touch the beloved Ocracats
who live at Captains's Landing.

I feel certain that this will be the first of many visits to

Captain's Landing, and I'm already looking forward to a return trip!

Art In The School on Ocracoke..... Critters & Creatures Preparations

Once I was invited to teach on Ocracoke, preparations began in earnest.  Friends here in The Sandhills and on Ocracoke generously began to gather parts and pieces for me.

Mary Neligan of Mary's Funky Fish was instrumental in all facets of this process!  We brainstormed; gathered; cut; drilled; painted; and created in her shop.  She also raided her neighborhood recycling for me on several occasions.  That's dedication, and I couldn't have done it without her!



Jodi Ohl was along for the ride too.  Although her medium of choice is paint; she dove into our prototype-making of Critters and Creatures with reckless abandon, and her results were 100% her!

Art In The School on Ocracoke..... The Students and Their Creations

Today I'll begin to attempt to explain the scope of my experience of teaching on Ocracoke Island as a visiting artist in Ocracoke Alive's partnership with the school.  It's been overwhelming in the best possible way!  It's hard to know where to start, so I'll begin today at the heart of it all with The Students and Their Creations.  

While I was on Ocracoke, I was asked to work with students in 4th through 8th grade; home school students of all ages were also included.  To say that these young folks are amazing would be an understatement.  They were enthusiastic, well behaved, funny, and engaging.  Without exception, I enjoyed my time with each and every one of them.

It was interesting to watch the manner in which they approached their projects.  Some dove right in with reckless abandon; others were more thoughtful in planning their creations.  With only forty-five minutes per class, including travel time, we added additional after school sessions for all who were interested in attending.
